A note only works if you see it at the moment it matters. Put it somewhere you will not look, and it might as well not exist. The fix is to keep each note where you will be when you need it: on the document or web page it is about, at the place you need it, or at the time you need it.
That is what TackNote does. On a Mac, a note sticks to an app window, a web page, a file or a folder, and it comes back whenever that thing is in front of you again. On an Android phone, a note can be tacked to a place and tell you when you arrive. TackNote for iPhone, which does the same, is coming this month (October 2026). And any note can carry a reminder for a set time.
Every answer is listed in Which one fits you below.
Why a note you cannot see is a note you forget
Most of us have a desk, a fridge or a screen edge covered in notes we no longer read. The note was written with good intentions, then it became part of the furniture. The opposite problem is just as common: the note is safely filed away in an app, and nothing ever brings it back in front of you.
Read the reviews of almost any sticky notes app and you will find people describing the same thing in their own words. They want a note that is there when they get there. Some mention a busy job, some mention getting older, some mention ADHD, and plenty just have too much going on. We want to be clear: TackNote is a sticky notes app, not a medical or therapy tool, and we make no claims about any condition. What it does is simple. It puts your note in front of you at the right moment, and keeps it out of the way the rest of the time.
There are three moments when a note is most useful:
- When you open the thing it is about. The spreadsheet, the email thread, the bill payment page, the project folder.
- When you arrive somewhere. The store, the office, a relative's house, your own front door.
- At a certain time. The call at nine, the bill due on Friday.
At your computer: notes that come back with the window
TackNote for Mac lives in your menu bar. You stick a note to whatever is in front of you, and from then on it belongs there:
- An app window. A document, a design file, a chat or any app window. The note reappears when that window is in front.
- A web page. The note comes back when you revisit that address, even in a new tab or on another day. Good for the bank page where you always need the same reference number, or the form you keep meaning to finish.
- A file or folder. Keep a note attached to a specific file or Finder folder so its context stays with it.
- Your desktop. If you want a note that is always visible, a desktop note is not tied to any window and shows on every desktop.
When you leave the window or page, the note steps out of the way, so your screen does not fill up with notes about things you are not doing right now. That matters for the "part of the furniture" problem: a note that only appears when it is relevant is a note you still notice.
TackNote needs the Accessibility permission in System Settings to see which window is in front. That is how a note knows when to come back. It asks the first time you open it, and you can grant it later from TackNote's Settings.

Sticking notes to things raises a fair question: what if you forget where you stuck it? TackNote has an answer for that too. TackBoard, opened from the menu bar, shows every note as a card on one corkboard, whether or not you are near the window it belongs to. A card and its floating note are the same note, so a change to one shows in the other.
If the thing a note was stuck to goes away (you close a window for good, delete a file, or a page is retired), the note is not lost. It moves to Needs a Home on TackBoard, where a Re-home button lets you stick it somewhere new. Nothing is deleted just because its home disappeared.
When you arrive somewhere: notes tacked to a place
Some things you can only do in a certain place. You remember the paint color you need while sitting at home, and forget it the moment you walk into the hardware store. A computer cannot help there. A phone can.
TackNote for Android is on Google Play now. Stand where a note belongs, open it, tap Tack to a place, give the place a name such as "The hardware store", and choose how close counts as arriving, from 100 to 500 meters. When you get there, your phone shows a notification with the place's name and the note's title. Tap it and the note opens.
To get those alerts while TackNote is closed, allow location all the time when TackNote asks. It uses this only to notice when you reach a place you tacked a note to. Without it, a tacked note can only reach you while the app is open. The Places tab lists every note with a place, nearest first, so you can also just look.
TackNote for iPhone is coming this month (October 2026) and tacks notes to places the same way. We wrote up how it works in notes that remind you at a place on iPhone.
At a certain time: reminders on the note
Some notes are about when, not where. Both apps let you put a reminder on the note itself, so the reminder and everything you need for it are in one place.
- On the Mac, attach a reminder to a note and TackNote nudges you at the time you choose. If the moment is not right, snooze it from the notification for 15 minutes, an hour, tomorrow at the same time or next week at the same time, or mark it as done.
- On Android, open a note, tap its reminder button, and pick a day and time. When it is due, your phone shows a notification with the note's title. Tap it to open the note. Reminders survive a restart of your phone.
What TackNote does not do
- Notes on your Mac do not appear on your phone, and notes on Android do not sync to other devices yet. To move an Android note to another phone, you send it as a TackNote file. Notes you make on your iPhone will sync to your Mac once the iPhone app arrives.
- The Mac app has no place reminders. Arriving somewhere is a phone job.
- The Mac, Android and iPhone apps are bought separately.
- It is not a medical device, a care tool or a substitute for advice from a professional.
Which one fits you
- You forget what you meant to do in a document, web page or app. TackNote for Mac: stick the note to that window or page and it comes back when you open it again.
- You forget things when you get somewhere. TackNote for Android, on Google Play now: tack the note to the place and it tells you when you arrive. On iPhone, TackNote is coming this month (October 2026).
- You forget things at a certain time. Put a reminder on the note, on the Mac or on Android, so the reminder lives on the note it is about.
- You write things down, then lose the note. TackBoard on the Mac puts every note on one board, and notes whose home is gone wait in Needs a Home.
- You want one list you can read anywhere, nothing tied to a place or a window. A plain notes app may suit you better. We compared the options in our guide to the best sticky notes app for Mac.
