The best sticky note app for Mac depends on what the notes are for: Apple Stickies is the best free pick for quick, throwaway notes, Apple Notes suits notes you also want on your iPhone, and TackNote, which we make, is built for notes that should show up with the window, tab or document they are about.
Search for a sticky notes app on the Mac and you will find dozens of them. Most look nearly identical: a colored square, a bit of text, maybe a font picker. The differences that actually matter to you after week three are not the ones on the feature list.

Download free trialHere is what we would evaluate, in the order it tends to bite. We build one of these apps, so read the last section with that in mind. The criteria stand on their own either way.
1. Does the note know what you are working on?
This is the one nobody tests before buying, and the one that decides whether you still use the app in a month. A note that lives on the desktop is only visible when your desktop is visible, which is almost never. So it is either buried behind your windows or floating on top of your real work as clutter you learn to ignore.
The question to ask: can a note be tied to the thing it is about? A specific document, a browser tab, a project, an email. If every note lives in one undifferentiated pile, you are just moving the mess from paper to pixels.
2. Can you find a note six weeks later?
Sticky notes accumulate. Any app can show you ten notes. The real test is a hundred, spread across four projects, when you half remember one phrase from one of them.
Look for search that covers everything, not just note titles: body text, checklist items, and transcripts if the app records audio. Look for real folders or projects rather than color coding, because color runs out fast as an organizing system.
3. Where does the data actually live?
Notes are where people put passwords they should not, client details, medical reminders, and half formed ideas they would not want indexed. It is worth thirty seconds to check.
Does the app require an account? Does it sync through a server the developer controls? Is anything encrypted at rest on your own disk, or just sitting in a plain file any process can read? "Private" in marketing copy and "encrypted on device" in the docs are very different claims.
4. Subscription or purchase?
A sticky notes app is a utility, not a service. It runs on your Mac, it does not need a backend to function, and it is hard to justify a recurring charge for something that will look the same in three years. Plenty of good apps do charge monthly, and if one earns it for you, fine. Just notice the total.
5. Can you get your existing notes in, and back out?
If you already have notes in Apple Stickies or Apple Notes, an app that cannot import them is asking you to either retype everything or run two systems forever. Both mean you quit within a month. Check for import on the way in and plain text or Markdown export on the way out.
Where the common options land
- Apple Stickies is free, instant, and already installed. It has no context awareness, no real organization, and no search worth the name. Good for a phone number you need for ten minutes. If free is the whole requirement, our guide to free sticky notes for Mac compares Stickies, Notes and Freeform.
- Apple Notes is genuinely good at storing and finding notes. It is not a sticky note: it lives in its own window, so nothing is ever in front of you while you work.
- TackNote, which we make, anchors each note to a window, browser tab, document, folder, or email, so it appears when you are looking at that thing and hides when you are not. Notes are encrypted on your Mac with no account required, search covers note text, checklists, and voice transcripts, and it imports from Stickies, Apple Notes, Evernote, Bear, and plain text. It costs $24.99 once, and one license covers up to 3 computers, Mac or PC. TackNote also runs on Windows 11 and Android, with a free Chrome extension; see sticky notes for Mac, Windows and Android for what each one does, or one sticky notes app for Mac and Windows if you use both. If you want a note to remind you at a time, we compared sticky notes with reminders on Mac too.
The honest summary: if your notes are disposable, the free option is genuinely fine. If your notes are about specific work you come back to, the deciding feature is whether the note can find its own way back to that work.
Questions
What is the best sticky notes app for Mac?
It depends on whether your notes are disposable or tied to specific work. For a phone number you need for ten minutes, Apple Stickies is free and already installed. For notes you come back to, the deciding feature is whether a note can find its own way back to the work it belongs to, which is what TackNote is built for.
Is there a free sticky notes app for Mac?
Yes. Apple Stickies ships with macOS at no cost, and Apple Notes is free with your Apple Account. Neither one anchors a note to what you are working on, which is the limit people usually hit around week three.
Can a sticky note stay on top of other windows on a Mac?
Yes. In Apple Stickies, choose Window > Float on Top, and the note stays in front of every window. TackNote also has a floating note, and it can stick a note to one window or tab so the note shows up only with that work and steps aside the rest of the time.
Do Apple Stickies sync to my iPhone or my other Mac?
No. Stickies is a Mac app, and Apple's guide points you to exporting your notes into the Notes app to see them on your other Apple devices. Apple Notes syncs through iCloud. TackNote syncs notes on web pages and Messages chats between your Macs through your own iCloud, end to end encrypted, and syncs every note except private ones between your Macs and Windows PCs through a folder you already sync. We go through the options in can Mac Stickies sync to iPhone.
Why do my Mac sticky notes disappear after a restart?
Apple's Stickies guide notes that when Stickies is closed, notes do not appear on your desktop, so first check that Stickies is open. If it opens empty, the notes are usually still on your Mac, and our recovery guide shows where to look.
Does TackNote work on Windows and Android too?
Yes. TackNote runs on Mac (macOS 14 or later), Windows 11 and Android 13 or later, and TackNote Lite is a Chrome extension. One $24.99 license covers up to 3 computers, Mac or PC, and TackNote for iPhone is on the App Store.
