What is TackNote?
Sticky notes that show up right where they belong. Pin a note to a window, tab, file, folder, chat, or task — and it appears only when you're looking at that thing. The rest of the time it stays out of your way.
Is TackNote on Windows, Android or iPhone?
Yes. TackNote for Windows runs on Windows 11, and one license covers up to three computers, Mac or PC. TackNote for Android is on Google Play, bought separately, and its notes do not sync with the computer apps yet. TackNote for iPhone is finally available on the App Store. TackNote Lite puts notes on web pages in Chrome.
How do I make a note?
Click the TackNote icon in your menu bar to add a note to whatever you're looking at. Right-click it for more options. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut or a mouse button in Settings.
My note disappeared — did I lose it?
Nope! It's just hidden because you stepped away from where it lives. Go back and it pops right up. If the thing it was stuck to is gone for good, you'll find the note in TackBoard under "Needs a Home," ready to give it a new spot.
My notes aren't hiding and coming back.
TackNote needs your okay to work this way. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and switch TackNote on. If it ever stops after an update, check there again.
Do notes work in fullscreen apps?
Yes. Take a window fullscreen and any note tacked to it follows, floating right on top of the fullscreen app, still editable. Apple's built-in Stickies disappear in fullscreen; TackNote was built so yours don't. Floating notes (⌘⌥⌃F) stay on top of everything too, fullscreen included.
Can I trigger TackNote with a mouse button?
Yes — set it in Settings → Shortcuts: a keyboard combo, or a mouse button where your mouse allows. Two things to know if you use mouse software like Logi Options+ or BetterMouse:
1. They often "capture" the back/forward buttons to remap them, so TackNote never sees the raw button. Free that button in your mouse software, or just use a keyboard shortcut.
2. If you map a button to send TackNote's keyboard shortcut, it works in most apps but Google Chrome ignores the injected keystroke — a Chrome-specific quirk (Brave and other Chromium browsers are fine). No app can intercept it, because the keystroke never enters the normal event stream when Chrome is in front.
The reliable fix: use a keyboard shortcut (works everywhere, including Chrome), or a remapper that emits real hardware-level events like Karabiner-Elements.
It won't stick to my email — why?
Open the email in its own window first (just double-click it), then add your note. It'll come back every time you open that email.
If you're using the split view — your list on one side and a preview on the other — open the email on its own and the note will stick. This works the same in Apple Mail, Outlook, and Gmail.
Can I bring in notes from another app?
Yes! Go to Settings → Data → Import from Another App. You can bring in notes from Apple Notes, Stickies, Evernote, and from text and Markdown files. They land in an "Imported" group so you can sort them however you like.
TackNote works with every app. With the apps you use most, it does even more — here are the three levels:
My favorite app isn't on the list — will it still work?
Yes — every app gets notes that hide and come back. We keep adding apps to the deeper levels over time, so if you'd love to see yours move up, just tell us.
Can I use my notes on more than one Mac?
Yes, in two ways. Folder sync carries every note between your Macs, and to your Windows PCs too. In Settings, Data, click Sync with Windows through a Folder, pick a folder you already sync, such as one in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive, and choose a passphrase. Then do the same on your other Mac.
iCloud sync carries notes pinned to web pages and Messages conversations. Turn on Sync web notes across my Macs (iCloud) in Settings, Data. Both are end-to-end encrypted, and private notes never leave the Mac they were written on.
How does syncing actually work?
Neither kind goes through a TackNote server. iCloud sync uses Apple's CloudKit in your own private iCloud. Each note is sealed on your Mac with a key kept in your iCloud Keychain before iCloud sees it, so it is end-to-end encrypted whether or not Advanced Data Protection is on. With both Macs signed in to the same Apple Account, a change on one shows up on the other within moments.
iCloud sync carries notes pinned to web pages and Messages conversations, because a page address or a conversation is the same on every Mac, so the note can find it anywhere. Under iCloud sync, notes on other app windows or local files stay on their Mac.
Folder sync carries every note. Each computer keeps one file of its notes in the shared folder, sealed with your passphrase, so your cloud service only ever holds ciphertext.
One nice touch: if a web note is pinned to a browser you don't have on the other Mac, TackNote offers to re-point it to that Mac's default browser — so the note still finds its page.
Where do my notes live?
Right on your Mac, encrypted, with no account or sign-in needed, and we don't track you. If you turn on sync, your notes travel through your own iCloud or a folder you choose, encrypted on your Mac before they leave it. There is no TackNote server in between, and we never see them.
Why does TackNote ask for those macOS permissions?
TackNote only asks for what it needs to do its one job — and macOS asks you to approve each one, so nothing turns on behind your back. Here's exactly what each is for:
Accessibility — so a note knows which window it belongs to. This is how TackNote reads which window is in front and where it sits on screen, so your note hides and comes back with it. Without it, notes can't pin to windows. This is the one that matters most.
Automation (Apple Events) — only when you pin a note to a web page. TackNote asks your browser for the current page address so the note can reopen on the exact page later. It's requested per-browser, and only when you actually tack to a page.
Input Monitoring — only if you set a global keyboard shortcut or mouse button to drop a note. It lets TackNote notice that one shortcut even when another app is in front. Skip the shortcut and you'll never be asked.
That's the whole list. TackNote reads nothing from your screen, and these permissions never send your notes anywhere. They are just the macOS plumbing for "show this note on the right window." You can review or revoke any of them anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
How do I know the download is genuine and hasn't been tampered with?
TackNote is signed with our Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple (Team ID 524LD79VQ3). That means your Mac checks it for you: if even one byte of the app were altered, the signature breaks and macOS Gatekeeper refuses to open it — automatically, on first launch. You don't have to do anything.
The download is also served only over HTTPS, so it can't be swapped in transit. If you'd like to verify by hand, open Terminal and run:
spctl -a -vvv -t open --context context:primary-signature ~/Downloads/TackNote.dmg
A genuine copy reports source=Notarized Developer ID and Developer ID Application: Keepers Code, LLC (524LD79VQ3). Anything else — don't run it, and email us.
Found a security issue? See /.well-known/security.txt or email [email protected].
How much is it?
A one-time price — no subscription. You get a 7-day free trial, no card needed. Students get a discount.
What happens after the free trial?
Your notes stay right where they are. You'll just need a key to make new ones — pop it in under License… and you're all set.
Can I buy TackNote in mainland China?
Not yet.
Online payment is not currently available in mainland China.
Leave your email and we will let you know when it is.
Thank you. We will email you when online payment is available in mainland China. Please check your email address.Something went wrong. Please try again, or email [email protected].I lost my license key — how do I get it back?
Easy — head to tacknote.app/recover, enter the email you bought with, and we'll send your key(s) straight to your inbox. No need to email us. Your keys also live in the original purchase email, so a search for "TackNote" usually turns them up too.
Can I use it on more than one Mac?
Yes. A Personal license covers one person on up to three of their own computers, Mac or Windows, say your laptop and your desktop. Your notes can sync between them through a folder you already sync, and web-page notes through your own iCloud too.
Is it one license per person?
Yes. A Personal license is for one person, on up to three of their own computers. For a team, buy one license per person: set the quantity at checkout and you get one key per license, each good for three computers. Buying 50 or more, or need an invoice? Email [email protected].
Does a volume license mean we share notes?
No. Volume licensing just covers the app on more Macs — it isn't shared or collaborative notes. Everyone's notes stay private to them, encrypted on their own Mac. (Shared notes aren't a feature today.)
How do I get updates?
TackNote checks for updates on its own and lets you know when one's ready — or check anytime from the menu. Your notes and license carry right over, and your notes are backed up before every update, just in case.
