You want a note on one particular page: a reminder on the client brief, a question on a pull request, the thing to check before you book. And you want to see it the next time you open that page, not in some other app you have to remember to look at.

Chrome does not do this on its own. Below is what Chrome does offer, why none of it puts a note on the page, and how to do it in about a minute with TackNote Lite, the free Chrome extension we make. Try it first:

That is the whole idea. A note belongs to a page. Leave the page and the note steps aside. Come back and it is waiting.

What Chrome can do on its own

Chrome has several ways to come back to a page later. None of them lets you write a note that shows up on the page itself.

So for a note on a normal web page that comes back when you open the page, you need an extension. Here is how ours works.

How to put a sticky note on a web page

  1. Add TackNote Lite to Chrome. Open it on the Chrome Web Store, select Add to Chrome, then Add extension. To keep its icon in view, pin it from Chrome's Extensions menu.
  2. Open the page and tack a note. Press Option + Shift + N on a Mac, or Alt + Shift + N on Windows. Or right-click anywhere on the page and choose Tack a note to this page.
  3. Type. The note says This page at the top, and it saves as you type. There is no save button.
  4. Leave and come back. Go to another page and the note is not there. Open the first page again, today or next month, and it is.

One limit Chrome sets for every extension: notes cannot go on Chrome's own pages, such as Settings or the Chrome Web Store. Any ordinary website works.

This page, or the whole site

A new note belongs to the exact page you made it on. Choose Whole site on the note and it shows on every page of that website instead; its label changes to Whole site and the site's name. Choose Just this page to tie it back to one page. Use a site-wide note for things like "the login for this portal is in the shared vault" and a page note for "send v3 of this brief by the 14th".

Web apps and web email

In web email and other single-page apps, the page address changes as you move between messages and views, even though the page never reloads. TackNote Lite follows that, so each message or view gets its own note. A note on one email does not follow you to the next.

Checklists and colours

Turn any note into a Checklist and tick items off, or switch it back to Text. Each note can be one of five colours: yellow, pink, blue, green or purple.

TackNote Lite is free for your first 25 notes, for life. $4.99 once for unlimited.

Find every note again

Click the TackNote Lite icon in Chrome's toolbar to open the board. It shows the notes on the page you are on first, then the notes Waiting in your open tabs, each tab tagged with how many notes it has, then every other note grouped by site. Type in Search every note to search the words of all of them, and click a note to jump straight back to its page. If that page is open in a tab, TackNote Lite switches to it; if not, it opens it.

Where your notes are kept

Your notes are stored in Chrome on your computer and nowhere else. TackNote Lite has no account, no analytics and no servers, and it never sends your notes anywhere. Because of that, the only copy outside Chrome is one you make: on TackNote Lite's settings page, choose Save a backup to save your notes to a file, and Restore a backup to bring them back on another computer.

What it costs

Your first 25 notes are free, for life. If you need more, unlimited notes are $4.99 once, with no subscription. Notes you already have always keep working, even past the free limit. Unlock keys are checked on your computer, offline.

Using a Chromebook? The same extension works there, with one difference in the shortcut, which we cover in sticky notes on a Chromebook.

Want notes beyond the browser? TackNote Lite is a separate, lighter app that lives in Chrome. Our desktop app, TackNote for Mac and Windows, tacks notes to every app, file and folder on your computer as well as to browser tabs; we explain the Mac side in how to pin a note to a specific browser tab.

Questions

Can you add a note to a web page in Chrome without an extension?

Not to an ordinary web page. Chrome can bookmark a page or add it to your reading list, and since February 2026 it can add notes to a PDF, but it has no way to attach your own note to a normal page and show it when you return. An extension such as TackNote Lite does that.

Does the note stay when I close the tab?

Yes. TackNote Lite saves the note as you type and keeps it in Chrome on your computer. Open the page again, even days later, and the note is back where you left it.

Can one note show on every page of a website?

Yes. Switch the note from This page to Whole site and it appears on every page of that site.

Is TackNote Lite free?

Your first 25 notes are free, for life. Unlimited notes are $4.99 once, with no subscription, and notes you already have keep working.
